Collaboration Event Between MSMEs and Environmental Startup Enthusiasts in Indonesia

Updated: Sep 9, 2023

The ECO-S Climate Tech Hub is fostering sustainable business collaborations between startups and Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) through the event 'MSMEs: Drivers & Barriers in adopting sustainable practices.' The talk show, held at ECO-S Coworking & Office Space, focuses on the significant role of MSMEs in Indonesia's economic growth. The MSME sector represents 99% of the total business units in the country.

Their contribution accounts for 60.5% of the national GDP and provides employment for 96.9% of the national workforce. Therefore, it is essential to raise awareness and assist MSMEs in adopting sustainable practices to create a stronger foundation for Indonesia's economy.

During the panel discussion session, speakers and participants discussed the importance of environmental, social, and corporate governance factors that should be considered regardless of a company's size. Ultimately, all these factors will affect a company's productivity, efficiency, and profitability. Additionally, the speakers provided tips to MSMEs on transitioning to sustainable practices and what factors to consider, such as resource allocation priorities and finances.

Annette Aprilana, Sustainability & ESG Lead at Modalku Group, mentioned that sustainability can be an accessible concept for MSMEs. It can start by introducing them to sustainable practices that consider environmental and social aspects as foundations for responsible business operations. "As a digital funding platform that has an impact on MSMEs, Modalku Group strives to raise MSME awareness on this matter to support their sustainability journey. This way, we can channel funding to projects and activities that have a positive impact on society," she stated.

Furthermore, the event featured a presentation about the Climate Impact Innovations Challenge (CIIC) 2023 program. This is the largest climate technology innovation platform in Indonesia this year, organised by East Ventures and Temasek Foundation. The competition provides an opportunity for technology innovators to showcase their sustainable innovations addressing ecological challenges and mitigating the impact of climate change, with a total grant funding of IDR 10 billion. Registration is currently open and will close on May 26, 2023. Innovators can visit www.climateimpactinnovations.com for more information.

"Sustainability has a broad agenda and requires the involvement of all stakeholders to achieve scalability. Therefore, we hope that ECO-S can become a bridging platform for everyone to gather, discuss, and exchange solutions," said Cynthia Handriani Wijaya, Founder of ECO-S and Chief Corporate Officer of Daya Selaras Group.

This event was supported by Paxel Indonesia, Modalku, the Climate Impact Innovations Challenge (CIIC) 2023 presented by East Ventures and the Temasek Foundation, Daya Selaras Group, and Ecoxyztem.
